Verbal Communication: Power, Co-Cultural Theory & WHEN COMMUNICATION BREAKS DOWN

9/30/2015

Witness The inexplicable: A Fake, Real Interview of a Public Figure By a Real, Fake Hiphop Character

PictureAli G (as portrayed by Sasha Baron Cohen)
The above video, obviously a comedy, is set in an interview style. Does the interviewee, Andy Rooney, know that his interviewer, Ali G, is actually a comedian? Nope. See if you can pick out where the communication begins to break down. Extra points if you can spot non-verbal body language, and elements of Co-Cultural Theory.

FYI: Co-Cultural Theory examines how societal hierarchy and power structures affect language and communication,  and assumes that privileged groups set the norms for verbal communication.
  1. What is your impression of both men?
  2. Do you think that these two communicated well together?
  3. Was this interaction memorable?
  4. How would you summarize this interaction?
  5. Can you spot Co-Cultural Theory at work?

And For Context...

Here is a quintessential example of what Andy Rooney became famous for before he died in 2011 at the age of 92. Here he is on the news program 60 Minutes, in 2005.
